Re: SmithHaven Mall Store - ?

Thanks for the response. I wore a beard here and there...I was so young. I was in hunting and fishing, worked mostly for Ed Haller. I think of Joe Doherty all of the time. I am still in touch with Phil Gunther, he is in touch with a few people; I think Donna Figari is one of them; Malcolm Germaine....rememeber him...I still have contact with them at least at Christmas. I gave him a heads up about this site, so maybe some more Smith Haven people will join. Dave George vaguely rings a bell but I can't grasp the face....I am thinking really curly hair.

I actually married a girl in 1985 I was dating when I was there at Stony Brook, we came to NH in 1989, but we divorced in 1992. I remarried in 1996 and seems to be sticking this time.Never had my own kids but raised my wife's kids...now 29 and 23!

As I said in my other thread I worked in both Roosevelt Field and Smith Haven...both were great. I have nothign but good memories from there, and I know I was incredibly blessed during that time of my life to work for an employer that gave a hoot about their employees when they needed it most (being a college student at the time).

I remember just about everyone from Herman's. I still have one of Joe Doherty's carved birds that he made, on display in my living room. I think it says 1985 on the bottom, along with "JED." He cracked me up; I told him once that I was going to get those Transitions eyeglasses that get dark in the sun, and he goes, in his usual gruff way,  "Yeah, they'll get you killed driving into a tunnel, too, won't be able to see a damned thing."   Malcolm was the first one of us to get a home VCR; I remember a big bunch of us went over his house to watch a movie.

Re: SmithHaven Mall Store - ?

It is a natural process of life I suppose how we all move on and lose touch. I don't remember a lot of names but I remember a lot of faces. But this applies to a lot more than Herman's. I have now had 24 years with Liberty Mutual and had many assignments, had many people come and go through my life, as I am sure you have, too. So I have learned to be the best person I can be to the ones who are in my presence. Amazes me, too, how sometimes I seem to meet the same souls or spirits over and over again.

I tried to keep in touch with Malcolm and Carol and did until maybe only four or five years ago. It was all Carol, he'd moved on. That's okay. ANd Phil Gunther I still talk to once or twice a year. I'd love to find Ed Haller...he was my manager in Roosevelt Field and Smith Haven, and he was always really good to me.

The advent of the internet has actually brought so many people back in my life. Quite a few college friends. Old neighborhood kids I grew up with. Now Hermans. I am enjoying the Facebook thing....although I am realizing why I let a few people go.

I truly have an incredibly blessed life.

Connie hi, this is Karen Gajdek (weekend bookkeeper, cashier).....how are you.

This site is awesome!  I have so many great memories and friends still from here.  I keep in touch with Ninette Baron, Donna Figari, Bonnie King and Thel (she married a cousin of a friend of my brothers, so only when there are family functions do I see her).

I loved my time there.....it was my BEST job ever!

Hi Karen! I remember you. It was a lot of fun there, at least after work. I kept in touch with Donna for years, even rented out her basement for a while when I was single, but it just fizzled out after a while. Now I live upstate, but am probably moving back down to Richmond soon...no good jobs up here...You still on LI?

Hi Karen,  I see you found the site.  I don't think anyone hated their job at Herman's. I bet alot of us would have never left if they didn't close up shop.  We have to get together.  Talk soon, Bonnie

Re: SmithHaven Mall Store - ?

One and the same. Hey Donna! I mentioned this site to Jim and Mary Towers (March). They should be on in the next few days. I saw a number of inqueries regarding Ed Haller. I'll call him this weekend and see if he'd be interested in chiming in.
