    Fellow Hemanites:

My name is Ron Scherer and I am writing to tell you about my son Matthew.  Matt was 35 years old and married only two months when he was diagnosed with Leukemia.  Because he carried what is called a Philadelphia Chromosome, his Leukemia was very aggressive.  He underwent several rounds of Chemo and even a Bone Marrow Transplant during the year he was sick.  Unfortunately, the disease won and Matt passed away July 29, 2007.  Part of me is missing now, but the family wishes to keep his memory alive and has created a web site in his name at Legacy.com, which we invite you to view.  Simply enter the following link in your browser:

Matt was a Dean at John D. Wells Middle School in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.  He was a mentor and educator who changed the lives of many children. He loved what he did for a living; cared deeply for his "kids", and always guided them in the right direction.  Matt taught his "kids" the importance of education, along with caring and respect for others.  His students did not call him Mr. Scherer or Scherer... they called him dad.

In honor and memory of Matt, we have set up a scholarship at the John D. Wells Middle School and will be presenting this award to someone in each of the graduating classes commencing with the 2008 school year.

A donation in any amount will help make a child's future dream come true.

Please mail a check payable to Nicole Scherer, 111 Bionia Avenue, Staten Island, New York 10305 or Karen Scherer, 16 Comstock Avenue, Staten Island, New York 10314.  We will ensure the check is deposited into the scholarship fund.
